SciSpinner Max

Simulated microgravity you can measure.

The SciSpinner Max is a two-axis clinostat with independently controlled frame and core axes, a 167 mm sample chamber, onboard imaging and environmental monitoring, and a detachable motion sensor module that measures time-averaged gravity directly at the sample position.

Motion

Independent two-axis rotation

Geared stepper motors drive the frame and core independently. When the two axes turn at different speeds, the gravity vector is continuously reoriented relative to the sample, so no direction persists over time. Default settings follow Clary et al. (2022).

Measurement

⟨g⟩ measured, not assumed

The motion sensor module mounts at the sample position. During a validation run the system reports time-averaged gravity over 2-minute, 15-minute, 1-hour and full-run intervals, giving you a measured value from your own instrument to report with your experimental conditions.

Observation

Imaging and environmental monitoring

A 12 MP camera in the core captures still images and time-lapse sequences, with 850 nm illumination for imaging in the dark. Temperature and humidity are logged at 1 Hz, and 130 RGBW LEDs provide scheduled day/night lighting. Images and sensor data are saved to a USB drive.

Web interface

Local web interface

Control the instrument from its touchscreen or from any phone, tablet or computer connected to the SciSpinner Wi-Fi network. No internet connection or cloud account is required.

Sensors page, Gravity tab: live time-averaged gravity with 15 minute, 1 hour and whole-run averages and a history chart
Sensors › Gravity: ⟨g⟩ over four windows during a validation run.
Sensors page, Rotation tab: rotation rate about each axis plotted over time
Sensors › Rotation: rate about each axis from the motion sensor module.

Tools

Analyze a run in your browser

Drop a run’s imu.csv file into the g-level analysis tool to calculate the sensor’s zero-g offset, offset-corrected time-averaged ⟨g⟩ over 15-minute and 1-hour windows, sphere coverage and a comparison with the kinematic model. Processing runs locally in your browser; no experiment data is uploaded.

Open the analysis tool

  • Zero-g offset by sphere fit, with per-axis scale
  • ⟨g⟩ raw, offset-corrected and modeled (Clary et al. 2022)
  • Coverage of the unit sphere over the run
  • PDF report, JSON results and corrected per-second CSV
  • Open source, GPL-3.0; the same page ships in every run folder
